The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in an old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child.

翻譯是吃力不討好的事情，翻好了是應該，翻不好挨罵，是好是壞，到頭來也不過是替他人作嫁衣裳。

就其他的一些關係，並從其他的一些方向去做研究，確實是難上加難的一件事，即使我想擴充篇幅也沒東西可寫。因為我們面對的是訪舊皆為鬼的煙塵往事，有的只是回音中的回音，那個留下來的活資料又無從打聽起。

他又站起身來。「會的，明－天。現在我得上床睡覺了，晚安。」他飛快地抓起燭臺，微微倉皇地離開了我們。從我們這陰暗大廳的一端，可以聽見他上樓的腳步聲，格里芬太太於是說道：「他愛上誰我可是知道了。」
