The departing ladies who had said they would stay didn’t, of course, thank heaven, stay: they departed, in consequence of arrangements made, in a rage of curiosity, as they professed, produced by the touches with which he had already worked us up.

那些離去的女賓，原先說好要留下，當然，幸好，因行程已定都沒留下，誠如她們口口聲聲說的，都怪他預留伏筆，把我們的胃口吊足，她們只好帶著滿肚子的好奇走人。
某某譯：
原先預定要離開，後來又說要留下的那些太太小姐們，當然—謝天謝地—最終沒有留下。她們依原訂計畫走了—正如她們自己說的，懷著被道格拉斯挑逗性手法所勾起、帶著股強烈得按捺不住的好奇心，她們上路了。

they departed（in consequence of arrangements made）in a rage of curiosity她們帶著滿肚子的好奇走人。
in consequence of arrangements made因為行程都已經事先安排好了
as they professed 誠如她們口口聲聲說的
(curiosity) produced by the touches with which he had already worked us up.
這強烈的好奇（a rage of curiosity）被Douglas製造出來，如何製造？by the touches, 而這些touches 就像前面的 mild wonders一樣，都是一種等待被搔的癢處。
Douglas就用這個（with which）把他們的胃口吊足了（he had already worked us up）
我先把某某譯的這段拆開：
「正如她們自己說的，懷著被道格拉斯挑逗性手法所勾起、帶著股強烈得按捺不住的好奇心，她們上路了。」
整段意思就是說，她們的好奇心已經被點燃，按捺不住，可惜又要走，都是被Douglas害的。譯文敘述不很清楚，最主要的原因是沒有加字，
女賓們想留又不能留，想留是為了滿足好奇心，這好奇心早被Douglas挑起，如今又聽不到精采的故事，就不免責怪起他的延宕，並以此做為藉口，可以名正言順的離去。
所以我加了「都怪他…她們只好」，這樣意思才會清楚完整。不然讀者真的只有瞎猜謎。某某的「原先（離開）…後來（留下）…」其實正好相反，是原先說要留下，結果是提早離開。
