稿件由Douglas差人從倫敦寄來，寄到他手上，他才有機會轉託給作家「我」，當然是在Douglas還活著的時候，原文中並沒有說Douglas病重，某某譯病重，不知根據甚麼？我的想法很簡單，死人是不能交代後事的，所以說「在他生前」。

稿件在第三天寄到他手上，第四天他就開始講了。These days 是指大家度假期間，這裡為了行文方便，我把次序稍做修改：

這份稿件在第三天抵達，第四天晚上…

our hushed little circle, 我是直譯，某某把它拆開改寫。

with immense effect, 我的解讀很簡單，他相當感觸，某某譯為「唸得有聲有色，娓娓動聽」，是把effect 解釋為效果。我覺得Douglas即使有新製造效果，那也不會大張旗鼓，像個說書人，職業表演性質的唸唱才會「有聲有色，娓娓動聽」。

當然效果做足了，聽眾也會隨著「屏息凝氣，寂然噤聲」，但這不符合Douglas的性格。火爐邊的一小撮人也已無需靠敲鑼打鼓來吸引其注意力，Douglas唸得再差，他們也照樣會集中注意力，因為他們要聽的事故事本身。
